Polarisation
Polarisation has been declared word of the year for 2024. What does the word mean? In social terms it is dividing the society into two ideologies for eg: left , right parties and In science terms it is aligning the particles in a single direction or plane for eg: polarisation of light. In the Article let us see why the world is getting polarised, so we understand the reason behind being it the word of the year.
In the year 2024 many countries faced elections along with India and the right ideology has been the choice of people mostly than left ideology. Raise of leaders like Trump, Modi, Macron, Petro, Maduro has shown this. The ideology put before by these leaders has attracted people a lot. Let us know the reasons:
- Centre stand in any issue is seen as the Bureaucratic approach and people who ever adopt this are seen as weak. But for any issue median path is the most effective path.
- Psychologically it is very easy to trigger people using extremist ideas. Centre Stand always involves thinking logically and rationally and has a lot of if-else conditions or if’s and but’s.
- Mostly the people now due to being fed up with the centrist ideas are leaders are involved in corruption resulting in choosing the alternate one.
- The Right Ideology leaders are conversationists and generally believe in god. This creates a link to their attitude and beliefs. People believe that they cannot be involved in any morally or ethically incorrect actions.
- Also people feel the need for Religious Revivalism due to Changes due to Industrialisation, Globalisation and Modernity. For the political leaders perspective this is the highest level of classification they can make and involves many voters.
- The Right Ideology leaders generally believe in capitalistic ideas or approaches as per Max Weber’s Theory of Protestant Calvinism and Spirit of Capitalism. People fed up with the slow pace of progress in the democratic or socialistic or centrist approach are now choosing the alternate approach.
- All these above approaches are very strong ideology which can influence peoples mind. To counter this alternative strong approach is presented thus polarising the society
- There is a notion in society that to achieve anything you need to be obsessed with the goal and extremist ideas are way to it.
- Social Media Recommendation Engines AI algorithms once you search a specific content, it shows the related content as recommendations thus promoting the ideas of a specific type as said in the Book Breaking the Social Media Prism by Prof. Chris Bail Social Media acts a prism by ignoring reality and intensifying political tribalism.
These are the reasons why the world is getting polarised and it is very appropriate to select the Polarisation as the word of the year.
