Stampedes
Stampedes are now a days in the news mostly. In recent times In the month of December we saw, Stampede at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad. Later we saw at Tirumala Temple in Andhra and now very recently at Maha Kumbh in UP.
What do you think are the Reasons for this and why they happen very frequently?
It is very easy to blame the Govt. Or the Actor in the Hyderabad case for the incident. But it is very true that no one does it knowingly. These incidents serve as guidance for future handling of mega events. In a lot of cases what happens is due to barriers like stones, garbage in the way many people move slowly and the people from back come at the usual speed. This congestion creates choke points. Also if there is any special attraction or any barriers a lot of people accumulate at the place. This also increases the crowd density. Most people at temples want to stay at sanctum santorum for more time and watch god. This causes choking.
How can it be solved?
The crowd rush is very much manageable if managed by scientific principles. According to the scientific management and research, If the crowd density is more than 5 per sq.km it may lead to injuries and If the crowd density is more than 7 per sq.km it may lead to fatalities. We should take care that the crowd density is less than 5 per sq. Km.
Whenever there are planned mega events we need to deploy a lot of Police forces to manage the crowd. For such mega events at least for 200m a police an should be deployed to have free flow of the public. If possible we temporarily recruit some people or accommodate the polices from nearby districts.
We can adopt the increasing technology like Drones and monitor the area continuously. Head count and face detection Drones can help in monitoring the crowd. Also deploying CCTV Cameras and monitoring through the command control centre helps.
A separate temporary local government with special administrators with temporary districts of the event region will help in handling the event a lot better and monitor every single place carefully
Though it is very unfortunate to see such incidents happen, we can adopt the scientific principles to manage the crowd rush and prevent crowd crush
