Why Sociology?

Image
Sociology as a subject is a study of society. There exists many problems in both world and indian societies. There are various perspectives of seeing that issue. As a civil servant to develop a policy that addresses the problems and to get the desired outcomes, you should know the different perspectives of analyzing an issue. A normal person also knows how society works and how people think. But what is the difference between a normal person and a civil servant? Suppose that to know the reasons for women’s backwardness in society mostly everyone using their common sense says that the dominating mindset of men, the patriarchal system are the reasons. You need not study sociology to know that. But as a civil servant one knows that there are still more factors and also the intersection of such factors led to the issue i.e., it is possible for a normal that he finds only 1 or 2 dimensions. Studying Sociology helps in seeing multiple dimensions. For the same problem one soc...

Stampedes

Image
Stampedes are now a days in the news mostly. In recent times In the month of December we saw, Stampede at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad. Later we saw at Tirumala Temple in Andhra and now very recently at Maha Kumbh in UP. What do you think are the Reasons for this and why they happen very frequently?                                          It is very easy to blame the Govt. Or the Actor in the Hyderabad case for the incident. But it is very true that no one does it knowingly. These incidents serve as guidance for future handling of mega events. In a lot of cases what happens is due to barriers like stones, garbage in the way many people move slowly and the people from back come at the usual speed. This congestion creates choke points. Also if there is any special attraction or any barriers a lot of people accumulate at the place. This also increases the crowd density. Mos...

Electoral Integrity

Image
In the recent Delhi Assembly Elections 2025, Many Allegations are being raised on the electoral list and removal of voters. Also in the Maharashtra Elections as well, ECI has faced many allegations saying it’s no longer an independent entity. Parties have raised a question within the span of 6 months from Parliament Elections how can 60 lakh voters get added. In this context let us analyse the Possibility of linking aadhar with voter id and its potential for a fair electoral list . Voter Id is granted to every citizen who is greater than 18 years old which gives them the right to vote. Whereas Aadhar is issued to any one who is a resident of India. It can be issued once a child is born in the name of Blue Aadhar and late after the age of 5, It is updated to regular Aadhar. Issues in the Electoral List and Voting: 1. Duplicate voters: Many of the voters have voter id at more than one place. For example, People in Hyderabad with Andhra Origin vote in both Telangana Electi...

Polarisation

Image
Polarisation has been declared word of the year for 2024. What does the word mean? In social terms it is dividing the society into two ideologies for eg: left , right parties and In science terms it is aligning the particles in a single direction or plane for eg: polarisation of light. In the Article let us see why the world is getting polarised, so we understand the reason behind being it the word of the year. In the year 2024 many countries faced elections along with India and the right ideology has been the choice of people mostly than left ideology. Raise of leaders like Trump, Modi, Macron, Petro, Maduro has shown this. The ideology put before by these leaders has attracted people a lot. Let us know the reasons: Centre stand in any issue is seen as the Bureaucratic approach and people who ever adopt this are seen as weak. But for any issue median path is the most effective path. Psychologically it is very easy to trigger people using extremist ideas....

One Nation One Election

Image
ONOE — One Nation One Election is one of the few most ambitious policies of the current Union government along with the UCC. What is ONOE? It is the Simultaneous Elections of the Local Bodies, Assemblies and Parliament of all the states. Earlier during the initial years of the implementation of the constitution simultaneous elections were held. But by citing various reasons either Presidential rule as per Article-356 was imposed by the Union Government or the Chief Ministers have dissolved their Government as per Article-172. In this Article let us analyse the need, challenges and measures to implement ONOE. Need For ONOE: In the world’s largest democratic country for every one year elections at least in one state elections happen and the political parties see them as referendum to their governance of passed over tenure. The party in power wants to win the election and generally the political party at Union sees it as a quarter or semi finals or pre finals for their gov...

Rupee Depriciation

Image
Rupee Depreciation has been one of the hot topics in the recent TV Debates and all over the media. What’s actually the issue? Let’s Deep dive. Have you ever had a thought why 1 Rupee is not equal to 1 USD. Actually it was, In 1947 while India achieved independence as it did not have any external debt. But it saw a first major devaluation in the year 1966 due to Indo Pak War in 1962 and the Indo China War in 1965 which led to the government spending a lot on them thus led to financial crises in India. Foreign Aids and IMF Loans came with a condition to devalue from 1 $ = 4.76 Rupee to 7.50 Rupee. Over the period of 25 years it further depreciated to 17.5 Rupees in 1991. In 1991 India faced the Balance of Payment crisis. It’s such a grave situation that our forex reserves fell to less than $1 billion which were barely enough for less than 2 weeks of imports. Then the IMF offered a Bailout loan on the condition of opening up the Indian economy to the outer world...

Mahakumbh Mela

Image
Kumbh Mela was assumed to be started by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th Century. Many Hindus believe that the Kumbh Mela originated in times immemorial and is attested in the Hindu Puranas about Samudra Manthana (lit. churning of the ocean). Dhanvantri emerged carrying a pitcher of amrita, or the elixir of immortality. To make sure the Asuras don’t get it, Indra’s son, Jayant, ran off with the pot. The Sun, his son Shani, Brihaspati (the planet Jupiter), and the Moon went along to protect him and the pot. As Jayant ran, the amrita spilt at four spots: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain, and Nashik-Trimbakeshwar. He ran for 12 days, and as one day of the Devas is equal to one year of humans, Kumbh Mela is celebrated at these locations every 12 years. So everyone take bath at these places to gain immortality. This is not the only theory available, there are many other stories also. But this is widely believed by Hindu society. Chinese Traveller o...
